Relative Pronouns

The Secret to Complex Sentences: Relative Pronouns

Relative pronouns (who, whom, whose, which, that) allow you to embed extra information into a sentence without starting a recurring new sentence, improving your flow.

Defining vs. Non-Defining Clauses

Defining clauses identify exactly who/what you mean (no commas). Non-defining clauses add extra info (must use commas).

  • "The students who study regularly get higher scores." (Defining)
  • "My brother, who lives in London, is a doctor." (Non-defining)
