Band Score in IELTS Writing
28 Aug 2014 admin
The writing task in IELTS may have different presentations, but the key elements in producing a well-crafted written response is not that different from those of other standardized tests. Just like in other standardized tests, planning your writing is of great importance before actually beginning to write your answer.
Some test takers though, begin writing immediately for fear that they might run out of time. However, scribbling your thoughts instantly won’t give you the leeway to produce a well-organized response that answers the task well. So, the question now is where do examiners base their scoring from, and what do they look into considerably to say that a certain written response is well-organized?
To determine your band score in the writing section, the examiner consider the following things in both task 1 and 2:
Task Response: This assesses your ability to come up with an appropriate, accurate and relevant position in response to the requirements of the prompt given in the task.
Coherence and Cohesion: This assesses whether your written response makes logical sense (coherence) and whether the different parts of your writing are connected to each other correctly (cohesion).
Lexical Resource: This assesses your ability to use different vocabulary appropriately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: This assesses your ability to use different grammatical structures appropriately and accurately.
